We are continually inspired by the stories of our team and Neroli Salon & Spa Mequon Hair Designer, Sydney, is no different. Her story is a great reminder for all of us to work hard, cherish family, give back, make personal wellness a priority and to always pursue your dreams.
What were you doing/where were you before becoming a hair designer?
A lot of people find it hard to believe, but I was a mechanic in the Army National Guard. It actually paid for some of my Cosmetology school.
What drew you to cosmetology?
I attended college when I was activated to serve one year state side. I had always loved doing hair and makeup and decided to go to Cosmetology school after my deployment.
I understand you have two children! How has it been working at Neroli, while also being a mother?
It’s been awesome. I have a great work – life balance. My babies are everything to me, but I look forward to getting some “adult” time at work. On the other side, I love coming home from work and seeing how excited they are to see me. I wish that would never change. Even if they were 40 years old. I’d love to roll up and see them going crazy when they see me.
What is a misconception/judgement people often have about your services?
Most people think they can bring in a picture that they find on Pinterest and get that exact look that first day. There are so many factors that go into a hair color. When was the last time you had color? What condition is your hair in? Have you done a lot of color changes in the past? Is it realistic to get as light as you want in one round of lightening? If you’re doing a color change, it can take a few times to get that look.
What is your favorite thing about hair?
I love that I never feel like I’m working. I love to make people happy and beautiful.

Do you have any future goals?
Since having kids, my husband and I have talked a lot about helping children in need in foreign countries. I am planning a trip to Jamaica in the winter to help some friends of ours set up a second-hand clothing store in the small village where they are doing some mission work.
Where do you find inspiration, both inside and outside of work?
From my coworkers and Instagram. I am lucky that I get to work with such talented hair designers everyday. I also look at Instagram for short tutorials. Everyone has their own way of doing things and I love taking new techniques I’ve learned from others into the salon.
One thing that has surprised you in the beauty and wellness industry:
That it’s ever changing. It keeps on my toes.
Fill in the blank: On your day off, you like to ___.
Workout and snuggle with my kids
