WHEN YOU SPEAK TO MARISSA, it’s pretty obvious that she has earned her title as a relaxation master.  Her voice is calm, and her words are spoken carefully. She has a soft presence about her that, even without any treatment, gives a person a sense of ease.

Beyond being a massage therapist, Marissa is also a wellness and nutrition coach.  Her Instagram is filled with health foods, words of wisdom, and fitness inspiration.
In other words, Marissa lives a life of wellness in every sense of the word.

Everyone, meet Marissa.

Where were you before becoming a massage therapist?
I studied Environmental Science at Northern Michigan University. I had dreams of becoming a soil scientist.

What inspired you to become a professional massage therapist?
I have always been interested in massage therapy and any type of natural healing. I’m a hands on person and I love science so it seemed like a great fit.

Can you tell us a little bit about what your experience at Blue Sky was like?
When I attended Blue Sky in ’05, they had a very holistic approach. In addition to the required massage curriculum, I also took part in tai chi, Hatha yoga, Ayurveda, guided mediation, and a vegetarian cooking class. We had the option of choosing one of three paths of massage (medical track, spa and relaxation, and energy work) we wanted to master in and took additional specialized classes. I chose to be a relaxation master. 😉

Are there any points of difference for an Aveda massage?
Aveda services are great because they are totally customized to your personal needs based on the art and science of Ayurveda. Aromatherapy is a big part and is automatically included (as opposed to having it be an add on with an additional cost) and tailored to you.

What is the greatest misconception/judgment people have about massage therapy?
That massage is just a luxury. There are so many incredible health benefits to receiving regular massage that go beyond just the physical body. Also, massage doesn’t need to be painful to be effective. There are so many incredible massage modalities available. Deep tissue is just one of many!

What is your philosophy on healing?
I believe in a holistic approach to healing. In addition to being a massage therapist I am also a Reiki Master and a certified Heath and Nutrition Coach.

What piece of advice would you give to people before they book a massage?
A massage is like a little detox. Try to eat light and healthy and abstain from drinking alcohol. Make sure to drink plenty of water before and after your massage.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?
I don’t believe in feeling guilty about enjoying something. If you like it and it makes you happy, embrace it.

Finish the sentence: On my days off, I love to _____.
Spend time in nature, workout, read, travel, spend time with friends and family.

If you could domesticate a wild animal as a pet, it would be ____.
An elephant, but I may have to go and live in the wild with her. Not sure she would fit in my apartment. :-)
